Analysis of Professional works #1
Yu-Gi-Oh
The first Professional work that I looked at was a game called Yu-gi-oh. The things that I will be looking at is how the game evolved, the art styles including card backs and backgrounds.
Cards IRL
The card back has only one art style, its a mix of two colors spiraling around, this is usually a brown and yellow, but depending on some card packs, some of them came out darker, so they look orange and the brown becomes darker. (The cards that I am talking about are cards that are official Konami playable cards). There are different types of cards, monsters, spells, and traps, they all have a big difference in the look. Monsters are yellow and orange, spells are green and traps are violet, these colors have a few shades that are in lighter blotches. All the artwork for the card is right in the middle of the square frame. Other things that the card has on it, is starring on the card represent the level.
The differences between my game, that I am going to make and this game, is that the way to play monsters will be different. For Yu-gi-oh it depends on the level or the card effect and this allows you to play a monster, whereas in my game each card will have a number, even spells, and traps. This number will show how many turns you will have to wait before using it. This gives the player an idea of a cards effectiveness and how powerful it may be. This also makes it so monsters, spells, and traps are equal in terms of how quick they can be used. Reasons, why I am doing this, is to make it more strategic in the sense that you will have to plan what cards you use, when and what exact cards you use in your deck. This will also allow the game to build up so there won't be any 1st or 2nd turn wins. Another difference is that in Yu-gi-oh the rules, you can only normal summon once. In my game, you will be allowed to summon as many times as you want, as long as the requirements are met to summon. The color of the card will Black with red text. The theme of Yu-gi-oh is action and science fantasy and my game will be fantasy and strategy.
My game will have some similar mechanics to Yu-gi-oh, such as you will be able to attack, being able to summon cards, being able to play magic cards, counters ( for how many turns it's been for a card so you know how long you'll have to wait.) Other things that it will have in terms of mechanics is traps.
Yu-Gi-Oh brings people together in different ways for example near me in Harrow, there is a shop called calamites and locally every Sunday they hold mini tournaments where there are prizes to be won and even if you don't win any points you still get your money back. This shop is a comic book shop so it also brings people together like that and there have been many people who have come to check out some comics or manga and then seen the games that go on and starting going themselves. Every year there is always Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments around the world and the tournament is fun because many people can enter then there is a point system not also that but everyone who enters gets a prize this event attracts thousands of people who fly over to go the event.
Yu-Gi-Oh stay popular because they always introduce new cards and not also that but they also introduce new anime series so people watch that, it's aimed more at the younger audience the reason why Konami focus more on the younger audience because they know that most of their fanbase is older and that they will come back to the game if they don't play for a while.
Hearthstone
The second professional work that I looked at is a game by Blizzard. This game is called Hearthstone the reason why I am looking at this game is that of this game is the 2nd most played game this I have played. I think this game is really interesting since it is only a digital game and there are lots of animations in this game as well.
The cards style is really unique and done by many artists, these are styles that the game has been based off there other game World of Warcraft (WOW). So this game is influenced by their other game Hearthstone. The target audience I think are young teenagers so 12+ the reason why I think that is because that is the same target audience for World of Warcraft. Hearthstone has lots of different art styles since there are 100's of different card backs that can be used and that can be earned.
The differences between this game and my game are that this game won't have voice acting for my game and also the cards won't have animations, and, finally, my game won't have interactives around the board like Hearthstone does. This that my game will have is a different system for playing cards since the game has 7 slots for monsters whereas my game there are 3 slots. and the spells and traps in my game have to be put in a slot. Spells in Hearthstone can be played regardless if there are cards on the field or not. In Hearthstone there is a time limit but in my game, there is no time limit. I think that this is not a bad thing since my game is only against Ai.
Hearthstone as a game socially brings people together because there are these special brawls in the game that can only be done at some locations. This means that for people to do that they have to meet up at a certain place and then play that person when doing this they will receive a reward and it's also a fun way to play people in the local area. Another way it brings people together is that Blizzard has a thing called the Blizz con and this is their own concert basically. At this concert It brings together thousands of people together and then they also give out rewards for people that went and paid for it and then they have some events that go on, For example last year they had some famous streamers go up there and do this quiz against each other to see how well they know the game.
The game stays popular by their game expansions, for the game World of Warcraft (WOW). The reason why this keeps them popular is that they don't run out of new content to put out and this way there is a new meta-meaning that you can't have the best cards and never play again since better cards will come out. This gives the fanbase new activities to do while a new expansion comes out
